Kangoo Jumps into the USA

...coming to a fitness center
near you
April 8, 2010
Kangoo is the latest fitness craze to cross the Atlantic from Europe. Described by trainers and participants as a mashup of aerobics, dance and springing, the high-aerobic workout is gaining popularity because of its low impact on the joints. Cushioning the knees and sparing enthusiasts significant pain from old injuries and nagging aches, kangoo is becoming the new routine of choice for gurus and buffs who long ago gave up running, jogging, dancing and tennis.

Instead of a jump rope, a ball or a mat, kangoo serves up a new kind of sole for the feet. Once you strap on the hard-shell, snowboard style boots that are hitched to small treadmill-like springs, you're ready to bounce.

Dripping in sweat while springing into the air apparently causes a literal high while you work your heart, your abs, your glutes, your thighs, your arms and any other body part you can swing into motion.

Kangoo has spawned the requisite cottage industry for every craze on the rise — power master classes, bootcamp fitness programs, workout tapes and books. The first ever Kangoo Jumps World Convention takes place this year in Benidorm, Spain from June 9 to June 16. Aimed at trainers and instructors, the conference is intended to be a launching pad for more instructors to spring into action and make Kangoo a household name.

Although the boots have been around since 1994, the makers are quick to point out that comparable fitness gear, such as in-line skates and snowboards, took roughly 15 years before they gained real traction. Now that that day has finally arrived for Kangoo, people around the world are off and jumping.
