Kiddie Lingerie Line Not True

February 4, 2010

What's the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word 'lingerie'? Be honest.

Perhaps your answers, along with some spectacular visuals — courtesy of Victoria Secrets — is why rumors circulating about a new kiddie lingerie line from Miley Cyrus' nine-year-old sister and her eight-year-old friend struck a nerve.

Allegedly launched by Ooh! La, La! Couture, a small company run by two stay-at-home moms, the lingerie would purportedly offer "versatile styles that can be worn with sweet ballerina slippers, casual sneakers or paired with lace stockings and boots for more of a rock and roll look."

The company maintains that the story is untrue and that words were lifted from their press release out of context. Their goal is to manufacture tutus, not lingerie.
Perhaps part of the reason why the story gained such traction is because of the ongoing roster of pop stars who appeal to young girls.

We like to think of our youth as children, not yet "awakened" and laden in mascara, blush and lace. But when the pop field is filled with proverbial role models who act like some everyday free-spirited adolescent teens, keeping the blinders on can become a challenge.

And imitation is not always a virtue. When a self-possessed and assuredly sexual sixteen-year-old Britney Spears revolutionized the cutie-pie schoolgirl image back in 1998 with her breakout video ...Baby One More Time, cringes went all around when young girls remained glued to her image and began imitating her increasingly fluid dance moves. Celebrities, whether they like it or not, continue to set the bar.

Welcome J. Lo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Naomi Watts, Jessica Simpson, Nicole Kidman — who all sell perfume or clothes (either their own line or somebody else's), along with an array of other items... So it wasn't too much of a leap for some to step back and take a critical look at the marketplace and think, "There's an open niche here: young girls just don't have a reliable lingerie brand." And a falsehood was born.

But all the outrage expressed on bulletin boards and across the blogosphere over such a scandalous clothing line won't stop marketers from trying to branch out. As for John Mayer, he's hands-off. He says he wouldn't bother getting into the cologne business because his fragrance would "smell like sausage and sleep." NewsSip
